Slow Productivity
Is it possible to work at a natural pace and still achieve greatness?
I would have thought the answer was no a few weeks ago. Growing up, I saw the importance of hard work modelled through my family unit. Everyone seemed to be working constantly.
When I got into the workforce, I fell into the same pattern. Work more and more hours until I dropped.
Sleep and work again.
As a creative person, I was finding that I had no time to enjoy my hobbies and my creative pursuits, and If I did, it was pouring into an already full cup.
I started listening to a podcast by Andy J Pizza, called creative PepTalk, (highly recommend for those of you who enjoy being creative) and in one of his episodes, Andy talks to Cal Newport about the idea of working at a slower pace and still achieving greatness… Over time…
As someone who enjoys painting, drawing, reading, writing, playing music. It seems tricky to keep all of these juggling pins in the air. And apon reading Cal’s book, Slow Productivity, I came to understand the importance of keeping my big goals, but expanding my deadlines by years.
In a way, this turns the pressure off to more of a slow drip, and I have to say it has changed my perspective for the better.
Working slowly, increasing my productivity and allowing the timeline to expand is an exciting new chapter in my creative practice.
